THE OVERTIME BLUES

Written by Dave Howard and Greg Wray

I signed up to work forty hours a week
But for the last year workload’s been at a peak
There ain’t enough bodies to get the work done
And our busy season has hardly begun
I need a day off by body’s run out of juice
Got me singing
The overtime blues

It used to be that working extra was rare
The boss always said it’s a fiscal nightmare
He used to work hard to keep overtime low
That financial theory was gone long ago
He told me if I don’t pitch in I could vamoose
So I’m singing
The overtime blues

I used to think that working extra was fine
Every now and then like around Christmas time
But this last December Christmas was a flop
All of my work left me with no time to shop
Instead of nice gifts I handed out IOUs
And I’m singing
The overtime blues

So I asked the boss if he would hire more staff
He just looked at me and he started to laugh
He told me that no body new has applied
Ever since the day that Elvis died

My wife cozy’d up to me one night last week
But all I could spare was a peck on the cheek
I told her I’m sorry I wish that I could
But I’m so darn tired it would be no good
And I do so miss our old late night rendezvous’
Got me singing
The overtime blues

I’ve been working so much I’ve worn out three pairs of shoes
Now I’m singing
The overtime blues

Labor shortage stories keep popping up on the news
Yeah I’m singing
The overtime blues

I’ve got the J K L M N
Overtime blues
